Athletics Overview

Wildcat Sports

Students that are involved in the school community after school tend to be more academically successful. It is a HMS primary goal to have as many students involved in athletic and extra-curricular activities as possible.

T. L. Handy offers a wide variety of non-classroom activities throughout the school year - clubs, teams, intramural sports,  creative & service opportunities, and much more! Late buses are provided Monday through Thursday in order to allow as many students as possible to participate in these opportunities to enrich student life.

footballBoth competitive sports and intramural athletics are offered. Basketball, swimming, track & field, cheerleading, pom-pons, boys’ tackle football, and cross country are part of the 7/8 grade competitive programs. Note: Cross Country also includes grade 6. Students usually “try-out” for a spot on these teams in order to play. These sports require a completed BCPS Physical Exam form (with parent signature), and a $35 participation fee. The form and fee cover the entire school year. The free 6/7/8 intramural sports programs include swimming, flag football, volleyball, track, cheerleading, pom-pons, and basketball. (It should be noted that games or events sometimes have to be rescheduled due to unforeseen events.)

Handy also offers a variety of athletic opportunities through its “After School” program. Activities such as Wildcat Conditioning/weightlifting, the 3-on-3 basketball tournament, open basketball, floor hockey, 3-on-3 soccer, walking, kickline, and golf have been among the offerings.

Please contact Phil Zanotti, our Athletic Director, if you have any questions regarding the athletics or after-school programs.
